Sea Glass - For Joanna by Janey Bevan

November Prompt: Remembrance
Picture
Hard hungry growling pain
flecked with the spittle of grief.
The tide recedes and then recedes again.

Those eyes once soft and round
vacant and empty, staring.
Are there any memories to be found?

Small girls, sharing school day
secrets. Forever friends you said
as we hid under coats in dark hallways.

Ah the thrill of the chase,
red haired boys in low slung cars.
Laughing, running from their sweaty embrace.

Pregnant bellies swollen,
we drink gin and laugh again,
feet up in the bar of The Malmaison.

Green glass smoothed by the sea,
cold and hard in my pocket.
The tide recedes and then returns to me.

Janey, I just loved this beautiful and touching poem. It left such a impression on me long after reading. The imagery was nuanced and powerful!

Thank you so much Laura, I am so happy that it resonated with you, grief is at once personal and universal, and writing about Joanna I hoped that I was also writing about the experience of others.

Thank you Jodi, it was a work of love and I am so pleased that it has made its way out into the universe. Joanna was my oldest and best friend and I miss her every day.

How are you doing, and how is the writing coming along?
