CODE OF CONDUCT
At AWCS we expect class participants, members and event guests to treat one another with respect. We will not tolerate harassment of any kind, including but not limited to gender or gender identity, race, sexual orientation, class, religion, culture or linguistic background, disability, or economic status. Some events may have alcohol available. Abuse of alcohol or other substances will not be tolerated. If anyone feels unsafe, please contact us immediately or notify an instructor.
AWCS is a space of shared creativity and a multitude of ideas. Our members and participants come from an array of backgrounds, experiences and cultures. Politics and religion should stay out of the classroom at all times, unless it is specific to the topic of discussion.
Our writing is sacred to us. We flourish in an environment of shared ideas and experiences. We do not believe in censorship of any kind. However, we ask participants to be mindful and to use their best judgment when sharing work with others. For example - reading or sharing an assault scene may cause unintentional harm and triggers to others. You may write it, but warn people in advance of sharing. And, please refrain from sharing if there is no unanimous agreement to do so.
AWCS proudly supports writers. We want to protect the integrity of creative writing, and the intellectual property and copyrights of all writers. We support the ethical guidelines being considered by the arts community when it comes to Artificial Intelligence. We will not tolerate the use of AI that infringes on proprietary rights or harms writers, artists, and the community at large in any way. Our focus is on celebrating the writer's originality, creativity, and craft.
We expect that participants will treat others' writing with the utmost care and respect. Unpublished works are often shared via email and other digital means. Participants must agree to delete any materials that are not their own, after a class, and will not share these stories with others outside of a class. Plagiarism of any kind will not be tolerated. Names, titles and ideas cannot be copyrighted. For more information on Canadian Copyright Law. You can also contact Access Copyright for more information.
