Spoken Word & Slam Poetry for Beginners (Teacher's Edition)
Spoken Word & Slam Poetry for Beginners (Teachers' Edition)
(as seen at CCTC 2024)
2.5 hours
This session will be an exploration of how to teach poetry to junior high and high school students in a way that they will find fun — using slam poetry! Participants will learn about how to write and perform spoken word and slam poetry, see examples of student performances, and discuss techniques for incorporating spoken word into poetry units in a way that will engage students and leave them with a lasting love for the craft. We will also explore how students (and teachers!) can make use of spoken word as a way to tell their own stories and learn to express themselves in unique and creative ways.
