Giving human characteristics, thoughts and feelings to inanimate objects can seem silly or frivolous. We can’t possibly be serious writers. But why not? What stories does the sun hold, what does it think as it stretches its arms and yawns each morning, what secrets lie beneath the river’s surface, why is the motel so sad? Come spend a day exploring personification and how it can be used as a tool to elevate your metaphors, evoke emotions and tell a really great story.
This class takes place at the Alexandra Writers' Centre in Calgary.
Robin van Eck writes fiction and creative nonfiction but does lean slightly closer to the speculative side. Most recently her work has appeared in Solstice in Purgatory from The Seventh Terrace, WonderShift from the Alexandra Writers Centre, Forbidden Fruit from The Seventh Terrace and Very Much Alive, stories of resilience from Thge Selkie UK. Her work has also appeared in LampLight Magazine, Woven Tales Press, Waiting Anthology (UofA Press, 2018), Freefall Magazine, various other online and print publications both in Canada and internationally, including the The Inanimates I Anthology from Strange, Weird and Wonderful Publishing in 2013.
Her first novel, Rough, was released in November 2020, with Stonehouse Publishing and has a whole thread from the point of view of the Bow River during the Calgary flood in 2013. She has recently completed a second novel that might one day see the light.
