Call for submissions for public art project

Rotary Park, Mini Galleries
Theme: The Edge of Winter
Submission Deadline: February 6, 2023

SUBMIT NOW

The Alexandra Writers Centre Society, in partnership with Crescent Heights Community Association, is seeking submissions of visual texts such as: visual poetry, blackout poetry, or short prose in a visual style on the theme: The Edge of Winter.

Explore the interplay between the printed word and visual arts, while writing your unique perspective on our chosen theme.

The Edge of Winter broadly covers topics that fall under the transition between not-quite-winter and not-yet-spring. Think solstice, equinox, or stories of growth. You could write an ode to the joys of snow or a heated farewell to the cold. You could share a flash fiction about turning over a new leaf or the excitement of something in bloom. Let this seasonal cusp inspire you!

The text takes centre stage here, as we engage art spectators as readers.

Feeling extra creative? Each installation has room for artistic experimentation. You may choose to create a complete visual arts package (i.e. a diorama, a visual poem on canvas or something in between). Just be sure the poem or prose remains comfortably legible. Check the measurements below for more details.

Prefer to focus on writing? That’s very cool! The curation team will help add the visual oomph to your poem or prose.

Selected pieces will be curated and designed to fit in the mini-gallery boxes throughout Rotary Park (map) for March and April 2023.

Deadline for Submissions – February 6, 2023.

GENERAL INFORMATION
  • Visual texts are open to writer/artist interpretation.
  • Visual poetry is poetry made into a design on the page, ie. a wine glass, a leaf, an hourglass.
  • Blackout poetry is taking another piece of text, redacting certain words to create something new. Consider your aesthetics as much as possible.
  • If you’re already an experienced visual artist and can do more with the visual component of the work, we encourage you to do so. The more visual, the better.
  • Video and audio elements are not included in this project.
  • One submission per person.
  • We will be selecting 12 entries to showcase. Six will be up in March and six will be up in April.
  • A public launch event will be held on March 18 at Rotary Park. We will be celebrating art and words, as we approach the spring solstice.
  • Each selected entry will receive a $250 honourarium.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
  • One submission per person
  • All poem or prose submissions must fit on an 8x10 page in 12 or 14pt font.
