Since 1996, the Alexandra Writers' Centre Society (AWCS) has hosted a writer in residence every year to support emerging writers in our community. The writer in residence is a mentor who believes in nurturing the potential of up-and-coming writers, offering encouragement and support. Could you be our next Writer in Residence?
We encourage applications from Canadian writers of all genres who have at least one full length publication to their credit. This could be a short story collection, novel, poetry collection, a play that has been produced in front of an audience. This is a short-term contract, September to November 2024. The residency may be in person, online or hybrid.
The writer in residence is expected to perform:
The writer in residence should be working on a project of their own during the residency. Additional public events may be added in conjunction with community partnerships.
Honourarium: $6000
Applications must include the following:
Application deadline for 2024 is March 29, 2024, 11:59pm MT. All documentation should be submitted in one document (PDF preferred) to the attention of AWCS Writer in Residence Committee at [email protected]. The successful candidate will be notified by the end of May 2024.

- 45 1-hour manuscript consultations
- 3 one-day workshops
- a public presentation/lecture
- drop-in member events

- A cover letter (max. two pages) showing:
- Why you should be the next writer in residence
- Your experience and approach to mentoring other writers.
- preferred delivery method (online, in person, hybrid)
- A literary resume
- with full contact information
- your publication history
- selected talks, readings, workshops, etc. you’ve given that are relevant to this position
- A description of your project (max. one page) outlining your current project that you wish to work on during the residency.
- A description of your proposed workshops and other proposed events during the residency.
- Two letters of reference from people who can speak to your writing, mentorship, and/or community engagement
