Laurie Montemurro

Availability:  CURRENTLY FULLY BOOKED Online and In-Person – Weekdays 4 PM on, Saturday 10-3PM
Tutors: Grades K-9, Adult Improvement

Bio: Laurie loves language, playing games, reading books and being outside. Her life experience includes teaching, tutoring, performing, and writing. Her teaching motto is to create an environment where the student feels safe to express themselves as they are. Lessons are adapted to individual needs and learning style. Humour, games, conversation, and movement are just some of the elements employed in an average lesson. Laurie understands what it’s like to be a student as she is working on a master’s of creative writing.

Iris Hill

Availability:  Online and In-Person – Monday all day , Thursday morning, Friday morning
Tutors: Grades 9-12, Adult Improvement

Bio: Iris spent five years studying English writing at the University of Calgary, with a focus on creative writing and literature analysis. Outside of academia, she has written many essays and works of fiction. In that time, she’s learned how to recognize and rise above mistakes in both professional and creative writing. She has four years of experience as an AWCS Tutor and works hard to make sure her students not only understand, but appreciate the literature they read.

Erin Vance

Availability:  Online only – Tuesday
Tutors: Academic Tutoring

Bio: Erin Vance is a writer and academic. She specializes in English, Creative Writing, History, and Folklore. She has published a bestselling novel and her first collection of poetry is forthcoming from Guernica Editions. She holds a BA (Honours) and an MA in English and Creative Writing from the University of Calgary. She is currently completing an MA in Irish Folklore and Ethnology from University College Dublin. Erin has studied poetry at the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen’s University Belfast. She is the co-host of a history, folklore, and true crime podcast, Femmes Macabres.

Em Williamson

Tutors: Grades 11-12, Adult Improvement, Academic Tutoring

Bio: Em Williamson is a Bachelor of Arts in English who graduated summa cum laude and has also been accepted to the University of Calgary’s Master of Arts in English program for the 2021 Fall semester. She is a youth and adult poetry and writing instructor with over five years experience, and has also worked as a teaching assistant, where she was responsible for tutoring high school students both one-on-one and in small groups. Students find her classes both informative and genuinely fun, and past students have said that she has a welcoming demeanor and explains concepts in an easy-to-understand manner. She enjoys teaching and has a passion for encouraging a love of literature, and while her specialty is in English, she also feels comfortable with tutoring in Social Studies and general essay writing skills.  


Anne Hodgson

Availability: CURRENTLY FULLY BOOKED Online and In-Person: 1-4PM Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 1-6 PM on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Tutors: Grades K-12, Adult Improvement

Bio: Anne inspires children and youth with her passion for writing, reading, and history. She recently retired from teaching with the Calgary Board of Education after 39 years. Her experience spans all grades, as well as E.L.L., and students with learning needs. With a Fine Arts background, she combines creativity and project-based learning with the acquisition of specific skills and knowledge. Anne enjoys getting to know her students to inspire and develop confidence in themselves as writers. She was chosen to be one of twenty- three teachers to study at the Juno Beach Summer Institute for Educators in France in 2018, and she has been a speaker at the Calgary Teachers’ Convention. Anne is a writer, storyteller, and playwright.

All classes need to be canceled at least 24 hours in advance, via a phone call, text, or e-mail directly to the instructor, or the class is considered to have happened and will come off the total classes booked in the session. The instructor is under their own discretion whether to reschedule any canceled classes and is not obliged to do so. Instructors will never reschedule a class if that class isn’t canceled prior to the 24-hour deadline.
