Tutors: Grades 10 and up, Adult Improvement, Academic.
Bio: Adam spent five years studying English writing at the University of Calgary, with a focus on creative writing and literature analysis. Outside of academia, he has written many essays and works of fiction. In that time, he’s learned how to recognize and rise above mistakes in both professional and creative writing. He has three years of experience as an AWCS Tutor. He works hard to make sure his students not only understand, but appreciate the literature they read.

Bio: Erin Vance is a writer and academic. She specializes in English, Creative Writing, History, and Folklore. She has published a bestselling novel and her first collection of poetry is forthcoming from Guernica Editions. She holds a BA (Honours) and an MA in English and Creative Writing from the University of Calgary. She is currently completing an MA in Irish Folklore and Ethnology from University College Dublin. Erin has studied poetry at the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen’s University Belfast. She is the co-host of a history, folklore, and true crime podcast, Femmes Macabres.

Bio: Anne inspires children and youth with her passion for writing, reading, and history. She recently retired from teaching with the Calgary Board of Education after 39 years. Her experience spans all grades, as well as E.L.L., and students with learning needs. With a Fine Arts background, she combines creativity and project-based learning with the acquisition of specific skills and knowledge. Anne enjoys getting to know her students to inspire and develop confidence in themselves as writers. She was chosen to be one of twenty- three teachers to study at the Juno Beach Summer Institute for Educators in France in 2018, and she has been a speaker at the Calgary Teachers’ Convention. Anne is a writer, storyteller, and playwright.

Bio: Nigel Murphy is an artist, writer, researcher, and visiting lecturer. Nigel believes that a well rounded individual should follow many paths and study many disciplines over the course of their journey. Consequently, Nigel has contributed articles and research for multiple publications (including Philosophy Now and The Atlantic), worked in modern battlefield forensics, lectured on the subject of continental philosophy at Mount Royal University, and has served as an artist in residence at River Valley School. Nigel believes every learner’s journey is different, and that finding the right answer is less important than understanding the question being asked.

Bio: Em Williamson is a Bachelor of Arts in English who graduated summa cum laude and has also been accepted to the University of Calgary’s Master of Arts in English program for the 2021 Fall semester. She is a youth and adult poetry and writing instructor with over five years experience. Students find her classes both informative and genuinely fun. She enjoys teaching and has a passion for encouraging a love of literature. Em is a poet and prose writer.

Tutors: Grades 1-9
Bio: This is George’s second year tutoring with the AWCS after being a part of the AWCS Youth Program since elementary. He is a honours high school graduate from Westmount Charter School and loves to read and write. He loves working with students to improve and develop their academic talents. He has started his first novel.

CANCELATION, ABSENCE, AND RESCHEDULING POLICY
All classes need to be canceled at least 24 hours in advance, via a phone call, text, or e-mail directly to the instructor, or the class is considered to have happened and will come off the total classes booked in the session. The instructor is under their own discretion whether to reschedule any canceled classes and is not obliged to do so. Instructors will never reschedule a class if that class isn’t canceled prior to the 24-hour deadline.
