Memoir turns life experience, filtered through the author’s truest self, into art. In this course, we’ll explore how memories, perceptions, and beliefs can be shaped into meaningful, beautiful stories—whether in essay form or as part of a longer work. Through a mix of readings, writing exercises, and discussion, you’ll learn to recognize your own natural storytelling patterns and develop the tools to bring them to the page. Every life is filled with stories worth writing—we only need craft, curiosity, reflection, and a willingness to explore the past with fresh eyes.

This class takes place IN PERSON at the Alexandra Writers Centre Society.

Naomi K. Lewis is a writer, editor, and teacher who loves helping people tell their stories. She’s the author of several books of fiction and nonfiction, including the memoir Tiny Lights for Travellers, which was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award for Nonfiction. Her work has appeared in magazines and anthologies across Canada. As an editor, Naomi has worked with writers at every stage, from first drafts to final polish, and she brings that same thoughtful, down-to-earth approach to her teaching.
