Spaceships and ghosts and witches—oh my! In this course, we’ll explore the craft of speculative fiction and embrace everything that is offbeat, eccentric, and downright bizarre.
You might’ve heard of speculative fiction, but trying to define the genre is another task. In fact, you’ll likely find many different definitions of the term. Broadly speaking, speculative fiction encompasses any work that blurs the edge of reality including subgenres such as science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, horror, and many others!
Each week, we’ll dive into a different subgenre under the speculative umbrella. Through activities, we’ll work on integrating basic elements of story structure like plot, characters, and dialogue into the weirdness of speculative fiction. To get the most out of this course, we recommend that writers have a basic grasp on storytelling fundamentals.
If you’re interested in writing that steps outside the ‘normal’ world (whether you’re crafting stories where zombies are a metaphor for consumerism or plain ol’ flesh-eating monsters) this course is for you. So, grab your quill, comm, or Ouija board and get ready to tell your story!
This class is an interactive online workshop using Zoom.
