Ever since Annie Ernaux won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2022 by writing what many refer to as autofiction, buzz around the term has increased. But what exactly is autofiction? How is it different from memoir or creative nonfiction? Why read… or write it?
This 8-week course encourages writers to use techniques associated with autofiction to explicitly and enthusiastically blur the boundaries between fact and fiction, to liberate themselves from the constraints of memoir -- and to remix their personal narratives in delightful ways.
At the beginning of every class, participants will sample texts featuring contemporary authors who do autofiction. As these works are explored, participants see how they too, can: subject their biographies to a twist, construct alter egos, re-imagine life events, re-configure form, call “the truth” into question -- and create the most compelling literary, political and philosophical chaos.
In the second half of each class, participants will be given tips, tricks and relevant prompts designed to enable them to craft their own piece or pieces of autofiction, which they may continuously share with other participants as the course unfolds. Generous and insightful feedback from the instructor is also always available.
This class takes place online using Zoom.
Robyn Diner teaches literature and pop culture at Vanier College in Montréal, Canada. She is working on an autofiction novel titled Badass Teacher Lady: Tales From the Classroom and Beyond. Most of her publications to date are a mashup of the personal, the theoretical and the literary. She lives in the Mile End in Montréal where she continues to be amazed by the price of cute dresses at the neighborhood thrift shop -- never mind the cost of groceries.
