Rumpelstiltskin. The Fox and the Grapes. Beowulf. We’ve grown up on tales of wishes and magic and caution, worlds where animals talk and trials come in groupings of three. But how can we use these traditional stories to spice up our writing today? Whether you’re looking to craft your very own fable, create a fractured fairy tale, or weave legend and myth into your work in progress, this class is for you. We'll explore structure and rules, and then turn them on their head to best serve our own creations. Along the way, we’ll dive deep into the elements of character, plot, and world building. Most of all, we’ll fuse a little more magic into our writing.

This class takes place at the Alexandra Writers' Centre in Calgary.

Meghan Victoria grew up in the frozen wilds of Labrador and is obsessed with historical east coast life, all things weird and fantastic, magic, drumming, dragons, the woods, and the list goes on and on. After moving to Calgary, Alberta, she found a writing community that turned into family. Meghan’s short fiction has been featured by Coffin Hop Press, the Antigonish Review, Radical Bookshop + Press, and various other magazines and anthologies. When not crafting new worlds or crying over the editing process, you can find Meghan hiking across far-flung continents, teaching yoga, hosting full moon ceremonies, and snuggling her fat cat, Nancy.
