Collaboration is one of the most important skills needed in both education and the workplace.
Collaboration Without Tears
Kindergarten and Grades 1-2
What students will discover:
Just grouping kids without a clear strategy and asking them to create happily is generally less than effective. In this workshop, students Instead will learn the methods to not only positively collaborate but to create an excellent project as a group with minimal fighting, tears, and frustration. In longer forms of this workshop, students will walk through a project under guidance to not only reinforce the methods but to create a project that they will be proud of.
Workshop Options:
Single class - learn collaboration skills including
- What is collaboration and how can it be successful.
- Types of groups and styles of collaboration.
- Helping the students analyze the project and pick the best type of group and style of collaboration.
- Leadership and Followership - and how they depend on each other.
- Breaking the project into parts and assigning parts.
- Creating project expectations and managing them including positive language.
- Communication.
- Dealing with interpersonal issues and when to get help.
Half Day or Single Day - all of the above plus one of these:
One or two small group projects that can be accomplished in a short time such as:
- Group spoken word poem (full day includes collaborative editing of the poem)
- Dialogue to create a radio play or podcast
- Small scenes that can be knit together to form a short play
- Collaborative short story
- A literary project of your choosing
Week Long Residency - all of the above plus one of these:
- Write a class or school play and plan for performance.
- Write a choose-your-own-adventure story which can then be made into a group-written video game or a book to be published.
- Short story anthology - can be published
- Group Novel - can be published
- Poetry anthology - can be published
- Class or school magazine - can be published or created online
- A literary project of your choosing
Outcomes:
Students will learn how to
- Effectively collaborate by examining leadership, followership, and equity as a means to a positive group experience.
- Styles and methods of working in groups and how to decide on the best style
- How to give and receive constructive criticism
- Picking a project, breaking it down, and gaining a better understanding of its elements from beginning to completion. (Ex: plot arc, character design, world-building, scheduling, drafting, editing, and publishing).
Curriculum Touch Points:
Grades K-2
- Practice listening and speaking skills through sharing stories and presenting orally. Learn how to be a good listener, follow instructions, to collaborate effectively, and give helpful responses to classmates
- Learn about & examine story structure such as setting, characters, events, and narration, the different forms in which stories and messages can be shared, what makes a story enjoyable, and learn to make an enjoyable story.
- Learn about how to express yourself through writing, art, presentation, or physical demonstration.
- How to plan and execute a story, and practice imaginative thinking.

This program is best taught as a single session (K) or half-day program (G1-2). Multiple classes can experience this workshop over a day.
- $350.00 a session (60-90 minutes)
- $650.00 half-day session (morning or afternoon)
- $1200.00 for a full day
