What is the shape of genre? How do the conventions of science fiction differ from horror, from mystery, from romance? What misconceptions might you have about what it takes to write in a particular style or tradition?
Join four sessions on crafting genre across short fiction, including a seminar discussion, as well as three following workshops where you will have the chance to bring and discuss the development and direction of your own work.
Learn to refine your approach to avoid easy pitfalls and cliches and explore wider considerations of genre. This workshop will help you to break out of the strict and reductive view of genre, as well as how the literary genre scenes of today have evolved and developed beyond previous generations.
This class takes place in person at the Alexandra Writers’ Centre in Calgary.
