IN PERSON Table Talk: Reading and Fixing Drafts

In this course, we’ll read and discuss our stories. You’ll send one scene (2-3 pages, double-spaced) to classmates and the instructor before each class, and we’ll try to determine what the scene needs: stronger characters, perhaps? More details in the setting, a tighter plot line, a stronger opening? Maybe your sentences are weak, or you need a stronger voice. After completing this class, you’ll apply the lessons you learned to other scenes in your story and create a superlative piece of writing. Open to all writing levels and genres.
This class takes place in person at the Alexandra Writers’ Centre in Calgary.
Laura Swart is a novelist, poet, and playwright. She has taught creative and critical writing to adults for over thirty years, encouraging students to find and raise their writing voices. Her humanitarian work around the world—most recently in Ethiopia and Ukraine—have shaped her thinking, her teaching, and her writing.
