Learn to write or illustrate children’s picture books!
A class for newbie or seasoned writers, illustrators, or writer-illustrators
Join artist-author Carolyn Fisher for a class on writing and illustrating children’s picture books. Whether you’re a writer or an illustrator, a newbie or a professional, we’ll dig in to the business of books in this info-packed course. Bring your own story or illustrations or create a new picture book project in class. Projects can be as big or small as you like, including:
- Write a one paragraph elevator pitch. Or write a full picture book.
- Make a mini-storyboard. Or make a full storyboard.
- Make an illustration. Or illustrate a book. Or work on your illustration portfolio.
Find out about writing stories, storyboards, submissions and more. Workshop your ideas and get a detailed critique from Carolyn. You’ll end up with a draft of your very own children’s book project and learn how professionals pitch their work to publishers and agents.
This class takes place in person at the Alexandra Writers’ Centre in Calgary.
Award-winning illustrator and author Carolyn Fisher has illustrated eight books, three of which she also wrote. Her most recent book, Summer Feet (with writer Sheree Fitch) won the David Booth Prize at the Canadian Children's Book Awards and was listed as one of the year's best books by The Globe and Mail, and CBC.
Her book Two Old Potatoes and Me was featured on the PBS educational TV show Reading Rainbow. The New York Times Book Review called her book The Snow Show “…visually arresting…one of the most gloriously exuberant, inventive displays of computer-created art that I have ever seen in a picture book.”
Her art has been exhibited in the US and Canada. In addition to teaching at art college for seven years, Carolyn has talked to thousands of kids and adults in scores of libraries and schools about writing, art, and making books. She draws and writes from her home in Calgary.
