What sets us apart as writers from artificial intelligence? Our lived experiences. Our laughter. Our tears. Our trauma and our joy. We stow stories in every fibre of our muscles and in the membranes of our cells. Learn to unlock them with the uniquely human craft of the first-person essay. We’ll explore how to transform your lived experiences into heartfelt and humorous essays with a goal of publication so you can share your humanity with the world.

This class takes place in person at the Alexandra Writers’ Centre in Calgary.

Tina Petrick’s first-person essays on quitting law, appearing on reality TV, dating in Calgary, and living on a boat have appeared in The Globe & Mail, literary journals, and in travel magazines. Her essay “Lovesick Leftie Blues” went viral as The Globe & Mail’s most shared of the year on social media. Her first novel arrives in April (under a penname), published by a small American press, and her second novel is presently on submission in collaboration with Cake Creative and New Leaf Literary. Tina teaches law at the University of Calgary and writes for the book retailer Indigo.
