In this four-week class we will appreciate poems as archives that contain information about family, society, history, the environment, and more. We will read poems from a diverse group of writers that speak to the theme and explore how these works archive or hold information in different ways. Each week will include reflection on published literature, discussion, and writing exercises. The exercises will encourage participants to consider how the archive shows up in their writing and how they may incorporate memory into their creative practice. The weekly, 2-hour online sessions will cover the following:
Week 1: Poems as records of family, culture, and lineage
Week 2: Poems as archives of climate and environment
Week 3: Poems as time capsules and timelines
Week 4: Poems as documentation of world events
This is an interactive online class using the Zoom web platform.
