AWCS YOUTH WRITING RETREAT – February 17-19, 2023,
5 PM Friday to noon on Sunday
AGES 11 - 23
(Older youth are from the RIWO program for our alumni)
Play a game, run a workshop, take a workshop, run around in the snow, film a movie, jam, draw, write, or just curl up in a corner by the fire and read. You do what makes you happy.
WHO CAN REGISTER
This is a private event for our long-term club/class participants. To register you need to be a CURRENT or PAST member of one of our school year (Sept - June) clubs or classes (summer programming doesn't count).
COST - The more youth that sign up - the less it costs.
We need 15 confirmed registrations by JANUARY 10th and their fee paid by January 17th or we will need to cancel the retreat. We can have up to 23 Youth plus 5 supervisors at the retreat.
15-19 youth registrations - $165.00 per youth member / $206 NM
20-23 youth registrations - $140.00 per youth member / $175 NM
If you are willing to carpool your youth and at least 3 other youth - you can take $10 off of your youth's registration for each trip (there or back - $20 for both) and you will be given $10 per child you are transporting to or from the hostel.
Anyone 18+ Needs to pay the National Park fee of $10.50 per day or use their park pass when entering the park on the way to the hostel.
WHERE WE ARE GOING
HI Castle Mountain Wilderness Retreat located between Banff and Jasper. Just under 2 hours from the AWCS.
We will be carpooling. Parents who drive will have $10 taken off of their child's registration fee for each time they drive (There or Back or both) and receive $10 per child per ride for gas.
Each participant will be required to bring 1 supper or dessert dish large enough for 28 people AND a baked good (enough for 12-24 people) for breakfast and snacks. Breakfast pancakes and waffles will be provided as well as fruit, drinks, and Lunch (make your own sub).
MANDATORY GROUP ACTIVITIES
We will gather for meals and for an open mic each night. There will be a set time for bedtime, but everyone can go to bed earlier if they like. The rest of the time is your own.
There are two rooms of 8 bunk beds (Sleeps 14). Youth will be allowed to choose where they sleep. Police record checked and first-aid qualified supervisors will be in each of the rooms for supervision.
We will have a designated first-aider and first aid vehicle on site. We will have a maximum of 5 youth per supervisor all policed record checked, and first aid qualified.
