A writing professor told me, "You can’t write on instinct forever! You must figure out why/how a piece works—or doesn’t!” Many have restated variations of this advice. Richard Hugo says, If language exists only to convey information, it is dying. Donald Hall describes a powerful piece of writing as “a house with a secret room” whose mystery and emotion infuse the whole. A. Alverez refers to this mystery elixir as “the presence behind the words,” where, he says, the story’s power, emotion and energy resonate.
I’ve discovered, through my failures and successes, that this unseen presence that makes a story irresistible, that seduces the reader, resides, not in its plot, but first and foremost in its language. An exciting find. Through examples, exercises, discussion, and shared writing, this fun interactive 8-week course will delve into harnessing that elusive power.
This is an interactive online class using the Zoom web platform.
