When you are writing memoir or other forms of creative nonfiction, writing about the other people in your life is inevitable. How do you do so without violating their privacy? How can you be faithful to "the truth" when memory is flawed and subjective--and are you even obligated to to be? The ethical lines are in a different place for everyone, and there are no hard and fast rules. But by contemplating how others have navigated these issues, you can begin to define your own boundaries and create strategies to move forward. In this interactive workshop we will read and discuss different opinions on privacy and truth from the writer’s perspective, and apply decision-making models to our own work. We will create a safe and respectful space in which to share, reflect, and debate, recognizing that opinions will differ and are often tied to culture, religion, or trauma. Note that this workshop will not cover legal issues related to privacy or libel.
This is an interactive online class using the Zoom web platform.
