There are two aspects to the reader/writer relationship: the first is external, meaning their connection outside the manuscript via social media and events, the second is internal, defining the reader's position relative to the writer within the book. Sometimes, an author aims to be “invisible” within a narrative, especially in fiction; however, in nonfiction, the author must strategically position themselves to build trust. Both forms involve making choices about point of view, language level, and tone. This workshop will explore how it works, best practices, and expectations.

This is an in person class held at the Alexandra Writers Centre Society.

Mary Lynn Cloghesy is a writer and editor from Calgary, Alberta, as well as the founder of the Leadership Literary Lab, a program for nonfiction authors. She holds a master’s degree in critical and creative writing, has been nominated for the Claymore and Aurora awards, and has placed in literary competitions for Dreamers and Tadpole magazines. Her published work ranges from flash fiction to memoir. She also writes articles on healthy living, and co-hosts a retreat for aspiring authors in Banff National Park.
