Whether you want to moisten up your scene or have it dripping with internal juices, splatter a few drops of blood onto the page or have every syllable oozing with gore, there are ways to make your readers gasp, squirm, cringe and gag. This course will cover the elements of extreme horror and strategies that you can apply to dial up the extreme in your writing.

Bring your notebook or your laptop and be prepared to stretch your creative limits. Walk away with fresh ideas and your own extreme toolbox for writing high voltage characters and wild and crazy plots.

Warning: This is a course on extreme horror, and topics of sex, violence, torture, psychological trauma, and other disturbances will be discussed. There will be graphic and explicit examples used to demonstrate concepts.

This class takes place in person at the Alexandra Writers’ Centre in Calgary.

Julie Hiner is a heavy metal horror author. She spent her childhood lost in books and listening to the metal gods of the 80s. Her published works include a serial killer thriller series infused with 80s/90s metal/rock, and including both the Crime Writers of Canada Awards of Excellence finalist Dead End Track, and the Kindle Book Awards finalist in Horror/Suspense Final Track. She has also co-curated a horror anthology and several of her short stories have been published in horror collections.

Julie is the AB-NWT regional representative for the Crime Writers of Canada. When she isn't writing, she loves to hike and bike in the wilderness, and to bake fancy french creations. She serves toxic cocktails of metal and murder at killersanddemons.com.
