Part 5 of 6 - How to Make a Ghost Disappear
Picture
The mosquitos were bad, though the sun was out now. Daniel grabbed the bug spray and started to fumigate his front.

“Can I do your back side?” came a voice, followed by giggling, as Lilly appeared in the campsite, a school bag on one shoulder.

Sorry, dad, Daniel thought, as he dusted ashes off the seat of his dad’s old camp chair with one hand for Lilly. I hope you understand. Just one more rule broken.

There’s something to be said for having someone along camping, he thought while she sprayed him down. He held his breath against the cloud of poison and could feel his heart thundering, not yet recovered from the shock of her appearance. Lilly had to work on Friday, but it was a school holiday for him, so he’d driven out Thursday. While he’d invited her, Daniel didn’t expect to see her.

The sight of her felt like the sun coming out. Freshly-dyed, bright-red hair glowed against blue sky.

“Surprise!”

“I thought you weren’t going to make it! How’d you get here? I didn’t think the city bus came this far.”

“Jason drove me! My bestie. They’re going to camp with us too!”

Ambling up to the picnic table came Jason, a tall, lanky young man in a sparkly pink tank top that showed a tattooed midriff and belly button bling, and cut-offs both higher and lower than Lilly’s. They opened a high-fashion gym bag and took out something long, plastic, and tubular.

Daniel’s eyes widened. He felt his jaw go slack; he closed it quickly.

Jason’s face spread into an enormous, toothy grin, a diamond (or cubic zirconia) in one front tooth. They presented the tube Vanna White style; Aeropress was written across it.

“Now who wants a good cup of coffee?”
