Prompt: Before you go and do that...
Luca sat up straighter on his tricycle, determination shining in his eyes. He had always been a little adventurer, fearless and full of dreams. Mom sighed, trying to redirect his enthusiasm. “Let’s visit the park with the climbing wall instead. It’s safer and just as fun.” The park was indeed fun, with children laughing and playing all around. The vibrant colours of the playground equipment stood out against the backdrop of golden leaves. Luca enjoyed the climbing wall, but he couldn’t shake the image of the giant oak. He pouted, “I still want to climb that tree.” Mom said, “Let’s visit the zoo and watch the monkeys climb. They’re professionals!” At the zoo, Luca’s eyes widened with excitement as he watched the monkeys leap from tree to tree with effortless grace. “Now I want to climb even more!” he exclaimed. Mom finally relented, throwing up her hands in mock defeat. “Oh, very well. But before you go and do that, let’s put on all the safety gear, and maybe a bubble wrap suit?” As Luca climbed the tree, his laughter echoed through the branches, a symphony of innocence and pure joy. The sunlight filtered through the leaves, casting dappled shadows on the ground. Mom watched, her heart swelling with a bittersweet mix of pride and nostalgia. She saw in her mind’s eye the tiny baby he once was, how his first steps had been taken with such tentative courage. His first words, the magical nights spent reading bedtime stories, and other memories etched into her soul, painting a mosaic of love and growth. “He’s getting so big,” she whispered, her voice catching in her throat. “Next, he’ll want to climb Mount Everest.” The higher he went, the higher her thoughts drifted to the future, envisioning the milestones yet to come: his first day of kindergarten, the excitement of his first sleepover, the triumph of mastering a bike without training wheels, the pride of his first school play, the joy of his first sports victory, the bittersweet moment of his high school graduation, and the poignant day he’d wave goodbye as he headed off to college. These moments hovered like promises of a beautiful, unfolding future. Luca paused, looking down at his mom. She called up, her voice brimming with love, “Before you go and grow up too fast, climb down and give me a big hug.” Sydney Baxter is a versatile writer who crafts fiction, poetry and children's books.
