WORKSHOP – Writing Fiction for the Reading Brain

June 15 @ 10:00 am - 3:30 pm

Since 2011, neuroscientific studies have been able to “watch” what happens in the brain of a reader of fiction. The results have shown that reading fiction is even vigorous exercise for the brain than was previously thought. The “spell of narrative” has been confirmed as a biological fact as well as a writers’ and mentors’ theory. This workshop will review the science and suggest ways that fiction writers can take advantage to induce and maintain the reader’s immersion into their fiction.

Fred Stenson is the author of 20 books, including 6 novels and 3 of short fiction. He has won several Alberta awards and his novels have been nominated for the Giller, the GG for fiction and the IMPAC Dublin Award. He directed the Wired Writing Studio at The Banff Centre for fifteen years.
