Speculative fiction includes any element not currently part of our real world, including Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, and their subgenres. All are growing in importance and popularity. This course will examine elements that define these genres, conventions expected by readers, and clichés to avoid. We will also examine writing techniques that underpin successful commercial fiction, what editors are looking for in writing quality and professionalism, and what steps to take when approaching a magazine for publication. Come to this course prepared to workshop your own short stories or novel openings, to improve your craft with the goal of publication.
