Sentence by Sentence
In this one day workshop, we will explore how attention to rhythm, variation, syntax, and musicality can make your sentences more effective. Sentences can be a world onto themselves, creating character, voice, mood, and tone in a story. We will read and discuss the sentences of writers such as R.O. Kwon, Amy Hempel, Karen Green, Carmen Maria Machado, Renata Adler, Christine Schutt, and Mary Gaitskill, examining how they move readers in surprising ways, word by word, line by line. A workshop for writers obsessed with language, and its many powers, as well as those interested in getting more comfortable with the words on the page.
