This workshop is designed for writers (at all levels) who want to develop new work and to explore the forms of memoir vignettes and personal essays for the purpose of storytelling through print. We will examine the structure of effective memoirs and essays in the short form (under 800 words), generate drafts based on a variety of writing prompts, and hone those drafts based on class feedback and personal reflection.

The workshop will combine discussion of flash memoir pieces and short essays, and a series of writing exercises. Students will leave with drafts of several pieces and a better understanding of the genre.

This is an interactive online class using the Zoom web platform.

Judah Leblang is a Boston-based writer, teacher, and storyteller. He has performed his one-man show, “It’s Now or Never. He is the author of two memoirs, Finding My Place (Lake Effect Press, 2012) and Echoes of Jerry (Red Giant Books, 2019). His essays and commentaries have been broadcast on public radio stations throughout the US, and on several Canadian stations. He teaches creative nonfiction at Grubstreet writing centre in Boston.
