ONLINE The Villanelle
This musical nineteen-line poem form that runs on two rhymes and a refrain has been written by many famous poets: Dylan Thomas, Theodore Roethke, Elizabeth bishop, Sylvia Plath, W.H. Auden and the poet who wrote Invictus, W. E. Henley. Though tightly constructed, beyond its opening stanza the poem almost writes itself! It’s quite flexible and lends itself to many moods and subjects; plus, it’s a feather in the cap of any poet who writes one!
