ONLINE The Ultimate Close-up Magic Trick: Writing Short Stories
Neil Gaiman writes that “a short story is the ultimate close-up magic trick – a couple of thousand words to take you around the universe or break your heart.”
In this course, we will look at how to take a reader on a journey, or break a heart or two in just a couple of thousand words. We will look at what makes a short story a short story, as opposed to a condensed novel or part of a larger whole. Looking at both published stories, and our own work, we will consider mood, character, conflict and other elements to improve our short stories.
This is a collaborative course, that will consist primarily of discussions and writing exercises. You will also be asked to submit a story (this can be a complete draft or a work-in-progress) and to provide constructive criticism to help each other improve your stories.
This is an interactive online class using the Zoom web platform.
