ONLINE The Third Rail: A Story’s Electrical Power
The third rail is a metal railway track running parallel to regular tracks. It connects the train to pure electrical energy which then transforms into the motion of engines and wheels that drives the train forward. Similarly, our emerging stories (dialogue, character, setting, voice, language choice…) need a “literary third rail” to provide continuous energy to drive our stories forward. Join Rosemary Nixon in an exciting exploration of how to transform universal abstractions such as vulnerability, empathy, honesty, shame, revenge…into the third rail by powering our writing with dynamic specifics that will propel our stories forward to their fictional destinations, and deep into the reader’s psyche.
