An ekphrastic poem is a poem that is in conversation with a piece of art, usually visual art. In this workshop we’ll experiment with just how far we can push the concept of ekphrasis to open all kinds of new poetic possibilities.

This is an interactive online class using the Zoom web platform.

Emily Ursuliak writes both fiction and poetry, and has a MA in English with a focus in creative writing from the University of Calgary. Her first book, Throwing the Diamond Hitch, won the High Plains Book Award for Poetry. Emily was also selected out of a large pool of applicants for a historical fiction intensive with Lawrence Hill at the Banff Centre. She has taught writing workshops for a variety of organizations: Loft 112, WordsWorth, the Calgary Young Writers Conference and The Alexandra Writers’ Centre Society. She has held many roles within the literary community in Calgary, giving her a wide breadth of experience: she was the fiction editor for filling Station magazine; was the host and producer for the radio show Writer’s Block on CJSW 90.9 f.m.; and served twice as a member on the University of Calgary’s steering committee for their Calgary Distinguished Writers Program. In her day job Emily works as a librarian for the Calgary Public Library.
