Ars Poetica beautifully highlights a poet’s voice and relationship to poetry. Ars Poetica translates to, “On The Art of Poetry” The poem comments on poetry itself. Horace composed the first known Ars Poetica in a poem referred to as, “Letters to Piso”. In this poem Horace advises poets to read widely, strive for precision, and seek honest criticism. Ars Poetica poems are a treatise on all that poetry is and can be. Poetry as art; poetry as commentary; poetry as protest; whatever poetry can achieve by its existence is the subject of Ars Poetica. When writing this poem the form it takes is up to the poet. Or, should we say, up to poetry!

This is an interactive online class using the Zoom web platform.

Jade O’Riley teaches many poetry forms and styles and developed an editing method entitled Poet’s Toolbox to help poets gain writing confidence. Since 2007 Jade has taught poetry in several venues including City of Edmonton, Poetry Festival and Stroll of Poets; she’s published fifteen poetry chapbooks featuring the poets from her classes.
