ONLINE A World of Sonnets
In the 16th century the sonnet, the original Italian love poem, took off and began popping up in other countries around the world. Sonneteering was all the rage. The sonnet form is natural as speech and thus it took on variations to suit the language in which it is written; but everywhere the sonnet has remained a lyrical, devotional poem perfect to voice expressions of love. Whether it’s for a person, a philosophy, a way of life, or the love of nature the sonnet captures passion and dedication in fourteen lines or less! Class begins with an introduction to the sonnet style of the week. There’s time in class to write a new sonnet, share and get feedback. This poem is music to the ear and pure pleasure to write.
Sonnets Covered in Class: Petrarchan Italian octave; Shakespearean English; Spenserian Stanza; Espinela; Espinela Decima; Onegin Stanza.
This is an interactive online class using the Zoom web platform.
