Breathing life into characters requires less description and more understanding of their beliefs, lies, and truths; less biography and more knowledge of their Garden of Shame and the ghost that haunts them; less setting and more analysis of the geography, society, and the eras that influenced them. Bring your novel or short story characters to this course, prepared to workshop and critique.

This class takes place in person at the Alexandra Writers’ Centre in Calgary.

Susan Forest is the author of Aurora Award-winning Bursts of Fire (2019), as well as over 25 internationally-published short stories. She edits an award-winning anthology series for Laksa Media, and was Editor Guest of Honour at Keycon in 2021. The second novel of her seven-volume Addicted to Heaven series, Flights of Marigold (Publisher’s Lunch Selection), confronts issues of addictions in an epic fantasy world of intrigue and betrayal.
