Meet In the Middle

Join your fellow Alberta Writers for our second Meet in the Middle open mic and gathering in Lacombe, Alberta! Roughly midway between Edmonton and Calgary, this event hopes to bring writers in the region closer together.

Canada Council for the Arts Funding for Alberta Artists
Information Session & Two-Part Workshop

We invite you to participate in a free in-person information session, followed by a two-part, limited-capacity workshop for artists who want to go deeper into the Canada Council for the Arts granting process.

Information Session
Saturday, March 14, 2026 | 1pm–2pm MT
FREE | In person at AWCS

The session includes a short presentation followed by a Q&A, and is open to artists of all disciplines and experience levels.
Please note: Attendance at this information session is a required prerequisite for the workshop series.

Two-Part Workshop

Saturdays, March 28 and April 11, 2026 | 1pm–2:30pm MT
FREE | Limited capacity | In person at AWCS

Following the info session, Francine will facilitate a two-part workshop designed to support artists through the grant application process.

Part One: Writing a Compelling Grant Application
Learn how to prepare an artistic CV or resume, write a clear and focused application, and build confidence when applying for funding.


Part Two: What Assessors Look For
Gain insight into how peer assessment committees work and take part in reviewing mock applications. Participants will also have the opportunity to receive anonymized feedback on past or current applications.


Capacity is limited. A waitlist may be offered if demand exceeds available spots.

Meet Francine Cunningham, Artist Liaison Consultant with the Canada Council for the Arts’ Alberta Focus Initiative. This session offers an overview of Canada Council grants, awards, and funding opportunities available to Alberta-based artists.

This event series is presented by the Alexandra Writers’ Centre Society (AWCS) in partnership with the Writers’ Guild of Alberta (WGA) and the Canada Council for the Arts, as part of the Alberta Focus Initiative.​

Toronto Writers Community
Open mic nights

The Toronto Writers’ Centre and the Toronto Writers’ Community Open Mic is a welcoming space for writers of all backgrounds to come together and share their work. This event celebrates creativity, connection, and the power of storytelling, offering an open stage to poets, fiction writers, memoirists, and emerging voices alike.

Attendees can settle in to enjoy an evening of stories, poems, and prose, or sign up to read and share their own work in a supportive, community-driven environment. Whether you are an experienced writer or just beginning your creative journey, this open mic is designed to foster confidence, inspiration, and meaningful connections within Toronto’s vibrant writing scene.

Woolf's Voices

Woolf’s Voices was established in 2013. Their mission is to honour the Feminine within us all and create more cultural space for us to do so in. Woolf’s Voices has featured numerous artists of all genres. This reading series takes place four times a year at Shelf Life Books in Calgary, AB.
