Become the Next Writer in Residence at AWCS

Since 1996, the Alexandra Writers' Centre Society (AWCS) has hosted a Writer in Residence annually to support emerging writers in our community. This program offers a unique opportunity to mentor up-and-coming writers, providing guidance, encouragement, and expertise. If you're passionate about nurturing literary talent while advancing your own creative work, this could be your chance to join an inspiring legacy.
Who should apply?
We welcome applications from Canadian writers of all genres who meet the following criteria:
  • At least one full-length publication (e.g., short story collection, novel, poetry collection, or a produced play).
  • A commitment to mentorship and community engagement.
This is a short-term contract running each year from September to November, with flexibility for in-person, online, or hybrid delivery.

What Does the Writer in Residence Do?

The Writer in Residence (WIR) Program at AWCS is designed to support both the literary community and the unique skills of the WIR. The program allows the WIR to shape their residency based on their expertise and vision, fostering creativity, connection, and mentorship.
As Writer in Residence, you will:
  • Provide Manuscript Consultations: Offer one-on-one feedback and guidance to writers, focusing on nurturing their individual voices and helping them refine their craft.
  • Teach and Inspire: Based on your skill set and interests, you will pitch and deliver workshops, events, or community initiatives tailored to our members and the wider literary community.
  • Engage with the Community: Host drop-in events, public lectures, or other creative activities that inspire and connect writers.
  • Advance Your Own Work: Writers in Residence are also encouraged to work on a personal writing project of their choice throughout the residency.
The structure of your residency will be determined collaboratively, ensuring it meets the needs of our members while leveraging your strengths as a writer and mentor.

How this works
We invite applicants to pitch a personalized program proposal that reflects their approach to mentorship, community engagement, and creative collaboration. This proposal should outline:
  • The types of manuscript consultations you plan to offer.
  • Workshops, events, or community activities you would like to deliver.
  • How your residency will benefit the AWCS community and your personal artistic goals.
  • Provide a brief description (max. 1 page) of the writing project you plan to focus on during the residency. This could be a work-in-progress (e.g., novel, short story collection, poetry manuscript, play, etc.) or a new project you intend to begin. Let us know what stage it’s at, your goals for it during the residency, and how the residency might support your progress.
The AWCS team will work with the successful candidate to finalize a plan that aligns with our mission and supports your vision for the residency.
