March 19-21 Morphing Metaphor with Emily Carr
Metaphor is one of the most essential aspects of imaginative
writing, whether poetry, fiction, nonfiction, or drama. In this
workshop you will learn how to create and mobilize metaphors
that are original, surprising, three-dimensional, and, most
importantly, open. Through reading examples, lectures,
discussions, and writing exercises, you will learn to create
"open" metaphors and to integrate them into your writing.
April 30-May 2 Act One: Fade In with Wes Sutherland
Expose yourself to an introductory presentation of what screenplays/scripts, log-lines, outlines, synopses, treatments, story elements, and script drafts are, how they relate to one another, and how they can be used by the film and entertainment industry.
From TV series, short films, music videos, industrial videos, instructional videos, and feature films, the students will learn key story elements, formats, characterizations, and structures in order to blueprint their way to a short script by the end of the workshop.
Although intended for beginners, this workshop may also offer more advanced screenwriters a chance to review or learn new perspectives on the craft: to re-motivate or re-direct their existing workflow, or fuel their desire to write their best.
May 14-16 CSI Calgary - The Art of the Effective Detective with Emily Carr
In this course you will learn to think like a detective writer. Through writing exercises, reading examples, lectures, and discussions, you will develop an intelligent, elegant, persuasive, coherent, plausible & consistent detective. You will also begin work on two original mystery stories that feature this detective. No previous experience is required—mystery is an expansive genre, and welcomes amateur detectives, intellectual puzzle-solvers, policemen, private eyes, spies, even average folk caught in a web of suspense!
May 28-30 Life Into Story with Lori Hahnel
It's no secret that authors get their ideas from real life. But how closely should fiction resemble real life? Are some ideas better suited to fiction or creative nonfiction? In this workshop we will learn how to transform real life experiences into the stuff of fiction. Through discussion we will explore character, plot and setting and how we can derive authenticity for these aspects of our fiction from real people, places and experiences; and we will use exercises to begin developing memorable story. Come prepared to write and to share.
May 28-30 Crank It Out with Kimmy Beach
Got a manuscript you can't seem to finish? An idea for a novel that won't get itself started? Loosen your writing muscles with poet/travel writer/blogger/teacher Kimmy Beach. Through guided exercises and tons of writing, she'll put you through some literary calisthenics to ensure you go home with tons of words on tons of paper. Reading aloud/editing of brand new work is a requirement, so sign up if that's your bag. Guaranteed lots of fun, and lots of hard work. Write like maniacs, and begin to hone that writing. Paper and pen/pencil recommended. So grab your favourite writing implement and paper and come crank it out.
