Stories about war shape our understanding of geopolitical conflict, resistance, survival, loss, and love. War writing appears across centuries, cultures, and changing borders. War writing documents and witnesses, revises and re-imagines, mourns and hopes. As American veteran Tim O’Brien writes, “a true war story is never about war. It’s about sunlight. It’s about the special way that dawn spreads out on a river when you know you must cross that river and march into the mountains and do things you are afraid to do. It’s about love and memory. It’s about sorrow.”
This class takes place online using Zoom.
Diana Davidson is a writer based in Edmonton, Alberta, on Treaty Six territory and in the homeland of the Métis Nation. She writes about women, war, and winter. Her forthcoming novel Liberations (NeWest Press, Spring 2028) opens in Amsterdam on the last day of WWII in Europe. Other war writing includes “Waxwings and War Brides” (Consequence Forum, 2025) and “Vimy Ridge Vignettes” (War Memory, Alexandra Writers’ Centre, 2019). Davidson holds a PhD in literature from the University of York, UK and has taught at both York and the University of Alberta. Her debut novel Pilgrimage (Brindle & Glass, 2013) was a finalist for the Alberta Readers’ Choice Award. Her writing has won the Writers Guild of Alberta’s Jon Whyte Memorial Essay Award and been nominated for a Pushcart Prize.
