IN PERSON Return to the Scene
8 Weeks | Wednesdays | Begins October 2, 2024 | 10am-12pm
Instructor: Laura Swart
MEMBER PRICE: $300.00
NON-MEMBER PRICE: $400.00
In this course, we’ll examine scenes that develop conflict, character, setting, and theme, then apply lessons learned to our own writing: We’ll sharpen the beginnings and endings of our scenes, weave in emotion, add a gunfight or two, and titillate readers with tidbits on philosophy, science, mathematics, tap dancing, Lady Gaga, dog training—whatever interests us. Ultimately, we’ll create well-groomed, powerful scenes that appeal to readers’ emotions, intellect, and artistic conscience.
Don’t despair if you’ve written absolutely nothing in the past five years; we’ll do some freewriting at the beginning of each class to give you something to work with. By contrast, if you’ve recently completed a 190,000-word novel—congratulations—we’ll perhaps begin by tossing out a few spare parts. All are welcome; all will benefit.
This class takes place in person at the Alexandra Writers’ Centre in Calgary.
